Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, Stephen Ames and Scott McCarron Commit to 2017 Event
Victoria, B.C. (June 1, 2017) – Tournament Organizers announced today that three of the top PGA TOUR Champions golfers have committed to playing in the 2017 Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship. Charles Schwab Cup leader Bernhard Langer, along with PGA TOUR Champions winners Stephen Ames and Scott McCarron will join defending Champion Colin Montgomerie in this year’s field. The event will take place at Bear Mountain Golf Resort in Victoria, British Columbia the week of September 11-17, 2017.
Colin Montgomerie will look to defend his title after sinking a 15-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole in 2016. The 53-year-old spent a vast majority of of his career competing on the European Tour, but has made a second home on PGA TOUR Champions, having won four tournaments to date. Montgomerie won a record eight European Tour Order of Merit titles, including seven in a row from 1993 through 1999. His 31 career victories, which are the most of any British player in Tour history, gave way to a World Golf Hall of Fame induction in 2013.
Coming off back to back victories at the Regions Tradition and KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, Bernhard Langer became the first player to earn a career senior grand slam. In doing so, Langer collected his ninth senior major, surpassing Jack Nicklaus for most senior majors victories ever. This is the fourth time Langer has won multiple majors in the same season. The two-time Masters Champion has surpassed US$1.6 million in earnings in just nine events this season alone. He will look to improve on his seventh-place finish at the 2016 Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship.
Stephen Ames, who resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, starred on the PGA TOUR in the mid-2000s, earning four titles – including a breakthrough win at THE PLAYERS Championship in 2006. The 52-year-old made his PGA TOUR Champions debut in 2014. In April 2017, Ames secured his first PGA Tour Champions victory at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic. He shot a 66 in the final round to finish four strokes ahead of Bernhard Langer. He is the third Canadian to win on PGA TOUR Champions.
Scott McCarron will look to have another strong performance in this year’s event after nearly winning the tournament in 2016. The 51-year-old Sacramento, California native has had three PGA TOUR Champions wins in his career. His most recent victory came in February 2017, when he eagled the par-5 18th hole to win the Allianz Championship.
Tournament week will commence with Official Pro-Am’s on Wednesday and Thursday, where participating teams will play alongside a PGA TOUR Champions professional over 18 holes of premiere golf. Competitive action will follow with 54 holes of championship play from Friday to Sunday, with no cut.
