Bear Crossing race in Langford proves popular with bike racers
Posted on October 27, 2015Nanaimo’s Nicholas Kupiak and Carey Mark captured the men’s and women’s expert division titles Sunday at the inaugural Bear Crossing cyclocross races at Bear Mountain Golf Resort.
Kupiak topped a field of 34 riders in the 10-lap event, followed in order by Victoria’s Raphael Lalumiere, Drew Mackenzie, Rob Parkin and Kelly Guest. No finishing times were available.
Mark, at 46 one of the oldest in the 11-rider expert women’s field, bashed out seven laps in 46 minutes, 47 seconds, nearly two minutes faster than second-place finisher Andreane Lanthier Nadeau of Sherbrooke, Que. Victoria’s Tanya Larkin, another six seconds back in third, was followed by Emilie Thy of Cumberland and Victoria’s Joele Guynup.

Victoria’s Mark Haughey, master’s men (55-over); Sean Cruickshank of Victoria, master’s men (40 to 54); Emily Johnston of Comox, intermediate women; Victoria’s Max McCulloch, intermediate men; Talia Hill of Victoria, beginner women; Carson Damery of Comox, beginner men, and Jonathan Hart of Victoria, Kids Zoom Zoom half track.
The event attracted 334 riders in the nine categories, from young children up to expert adults. There were 321 finishers, an impressive 96 per cent completion rate. For a complete list of results, visit crossontherock.com and click on results.
